  • Minnesota Life:
    • EPIC – a new paradigm in estate planning
Because of recent tax law changes, your clients’ estate plans may be outdated. More and more clients are keeping assets in their estates due to the permanent $5.34 million estate tax exemption. EPIC (Estate Planning, Individually Centered) transcends traditional estate planning from just planning for what happens at death into planning for both life and death. Get more information below:
    • Discussing tax diversification
Your clients might want to consider diversifying their tax planning strategies. Tax diversification can help them reduce taxes and increase total spendable income. Discussing tax diversification with the client can be an effective way to introduce cash value life insurance and its advantages. Check out this Tax Efficiency Worksheet designed to help make this strategy easy to understand for your clients. So the next time you wish to introduce income tax strategies to the client, use the three bucket approach. Grouping assets by three tax categories – “taxed today,” “taxed tomorrow” and “tax-advantaged” – helps illustrate how those assets are affected by taxes.
      Think of them as buckets
      • “Taxed today” assets consist of salary, investment income, savings, stocks and other such vehicles.
      • “Taxed tomorrow” assets are retirement assets like IRAs, 401(k)s and annuities. Most of a client’s income and assets usually go into these two “buckets.”
      • The “tax-advantaged” bucket should also be considered in order to diversify the client’s accumulation and income tax strategies. This bucket consists of municipal bonds, Roth IRAs and cash value life insurance. Some clients ignore bonds because of the low investment return, while Roth IRAs will be a problem for clients who have reached the income restriction. Therefore, for clients who need life insurance protection, cash value life insurance might be considered because the client receives tax-deferred accumulation and tax-preferred access later on.

    • Buy-Sell Agreement Funding sales tip
Companies often struggle to function after an owner or a partner in the business passes away or suffers a debilitating condition. It is important for businesses to have buy-sell agreements in place and even more important for those agreements to be funded. Current and potential small business clients can use Trendsetter LB to fund their buy-sell agreements and take care of multiple funding obstacles with one product.
      • In the event an owner/partner dies, the death benefit can be used to buy out the owner’s shares of the business.
      • In the event of a chronic or critical illness the acceleration of the death benefit can be used to either continue the owner/partner or buy out his shares in the business.
      • The death benefit or the acceleration can be positioned as funds to help maintain the business until the owner/partner recovers or a replacement is found.
